The Problem: Dealers discovered that some 2012 Chevrolet Sonics were missing either a front inner or front outer brake pad. If one or both of the front brake pads are missing, the brake system will not only make noise, but braking effort is obviously reduced by a considerable margin. It goes without saying decreased braking performance could potentially lead to a crash, although no reports of injuries or accidents are attributed to this recall.

The Fix: Dealers will inspecting both of the front brakes and add or replace any components that were missing or damaged, including pads, rotors, and calipers. The service is free and is covered under the car’s existing manufacturer’s warranty. Chevrolet will send letters to Sonic owners on January 14, 2012, and the recall will begin before January 24, 2012, but owners can also call the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration at 1-888-327-4236 with any more questions.

Number of Vehicles Potentially Affected: Documentation submitted to NHTSA provides no estimate as to the number of vehicles that could exhibit this problem, but GM does say it will repair any and all vehicles exhibiting this condition. As a result, this recall touches all 4296 2012 Sonics made between June 2, 2011, and November 21, 2011, and both 4- and 5-door versions.

The front-wheel drive Dart will debut with a Fiat Group-sourced 6-speed dual-clutch transmission and a six-speed manual gearbox but in 2013, it will gain a new 9-speed transmission that is currently being developed by the ZF Group.

Mazda’s US division is recalling 215,000 units of its 2007-2009MY Mazda3 and Mazda5 cars manufactured from April 2, 2007 through November 30, 2008, because of a problem with the steering wheel system. More specifically, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said a defect in these vehicles could lead to a sudden loss of power assist which reduces the driver’s ability to steer the car, especially at low speeds.

In a notice to the safety agency, the Japanese automaker said that due to short supply of parts, “the first phase of mailing of owner notification letters will begin on or before September 15, 2010 and the second phase mailing will begin in September 2010 and be completed in February 2011.”

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has issued a safety recall on certain Mazda5 minivans from the 2009 and 2010 model year.

This recall focuses on the van’s fuel pump, with NHTSA citing that water may not have been completely removed from the pump’s harness connector before vehicle assembly. Thus, the connector pin may corrode, causing the pin to break. If the harness connector breaks, this could lead to an inoperative fuel pump. The Mazda5’s engine could stall, and the inability to restart the engine increases the risk of a crash.

Approximately 16,200 of the Mazda minivans are effected by this problem, and the safety recall is expected to begin on or before December 11th. Dealers will inspect the fuel pump connector and replace the harness free of charge. For the full details, follow the jump to read NHTSA’s official statement.

Volvo is recalling almost 7,600 of its 2012 S60 sedans powered by 5-cylinder engines because of a possible stalling problem, the automaker told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Volvo attributed the problem to software incompatibility, where the software used to regulate the fuel pump on models equipped with 5-cylinder engines might not distribute sufficient fuel “to the active part of the fuel tank,” which could cause engine hesitation or stalling.

A 5-cylinder engine is only available on entry-level, front-wheel-drive S60 sedans. The all-wheel-drive T6 and R Design models have 6-cylinders.

The automaker said it learned of the problem early in May and had received 23 warranty claims for the condition, but was not aware of any accidents because of the problem.

The Hyundai Veloster is in the news again. After gaining so much popularity for its quirky design, Hyundai’s 3-door youth car was fast diminishing from the spotlight for obvious reasons. Highly underpowered for a supposed sporty car, the Veloster is powered by a naturally-aspirated 138 hp 1.6-litre with direct injection. Even better, the GCC were given a 130 hp version of the same engine, minus the direct injection. But for some at least, Hyundai has addressed the issue with a turbo now.

Debuting at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show, the Veloster Turbo gets a new face. Even more aggressive than the base model, the face seems alarmingly similar to the upcoming facelifted 2012 Hyundai Genesis Coupe. It comes complete with black hexagonal grille, fog lamps and a revised rear fascia which now features two cenThe most impressive feature is under the hood. The new direct-injected turbo 1.6-litre engine now produces a stunning 201 hp with 264 Nm of torque. It weighs in at 1273 kg.

The suspension doesn’t get any new changes, while steering has been tweaked to be more quicker. The exhaust system has been updated, in line with the turbo setup, and should sound sportier as well.

Currently, the transmissions on offer will be same as the base Veloster, namely a 6-speed manual or dual-clutch automatic.

Other goodies for the Veloster Turbo include 18-inch wheels, leather upholstery, and a themed black and blue interior with LED exterior accent lighting. The infotainment department is taken care of with two TFT info screens in the instrument panel and a 450-watt 8-speaker system. Optional is a new grey matte paint direct from the factory.
