Audi’s entry level model for the North American marketplace
11th July 2009
Europe for over 10 years. This compact wagon, with its tasteful interior and generous power output, was designed to shatter the typical stereotypes associated with small, space efficient vehicles, such as cheap materials and poor build quality. As a luxury car manufacturer, Audi is highly regarded for their high quality materials throughout, precise user friendly controls and a superior fit and finish, and the A3 does not disappoint. Also unusual for this category is the A3’s highly functional all wheel drive version that tackles snow covered roads with ease. There have been no major changes for the A3 since its debut.
The 2008 Audi A3 is available in 2 trims - the base model 2.0T and a 3.2 Quattro. The 2.0T is a very versatile front wheel drive vehicle that is powered by a gutsy, turbocharged 2.0 liter inline 4 cylinder engine. Transmission choices are either a 6 speed manual or Audi’s S-tronic transmission, which is a manual transmission that shifts automatically. In previous years this versatile transmission was known as Audi’s DSG transmission, and it works very well. In fact, the S-tronic’s exceptionally quick downshifts and gear changes make it one of the best automatic-manual gearboxes on the market today that provides all the driver advantages of a fully automatic transmission. Acceleration is very good, taking the A3 from 0-60 in just 7 seconds. Fuel economy is pretty good too, with EPA estimates coming in at 22 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway. The 3.2 Quattro offers all wheel drive and a powerful 3.2 liter V6 that is mated to the S-tronic transmission. Horsepower is increased to 250 for this model, but due to the all wheel drive system, the more powerful motor does not provide much more in terms of acceleration but the 3.2 Quattro comes out of the 0-60 in 6.8 seconds. This version of the A3 gets 18 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway, which is also pretty good for an all wheel drive vehicle. Both models benefit from steering that is nimble and quick to respond to the driver’s commands. Of course, being an Audi, crash test results for both models are impressive as well.
Standard features on the 2.0T include 17-inch wheels, power windows, dual-zone automatic climate control, a 10 speaker stereo system and a trip computer. The S Line Options Package offers a sport-tuned suspension, fog lights, leather upholstered sport seats, aluminum interior trim, a roof spoiler and unique front and rear fascias. The Premium Package also includes some of the S-line’s features like the leather upholstery and fog lights, and adds an auto-dimming rearview mirror, 12-way power driver seat, rain-sensing wipers and HomeLink technology. The 3.2 Quattro has almost all of the features found in the S Line and Premium Packages as part of the standard equipment list and adds a Satellite radio. Options for both models include a dual-pane sunroof, bi-xenon headlights, a navigation system, Bluetooth and iPod connectivity and a manual rear sunshade. A Cold Weather Options package offers heated exterior mirrors, windshield washer nozzles and seats.
Both versions of The 2008 Audi A3 offer brisk performance, a comfortable ride and a sporty driving experience. However, based on the MSRP, the 2.0T is a better value that delivers more than ample power for most drivers. The 3.2 Quattro is almost $8000 more than the 2.0T, and at that price there are a few other luxury imports that offer comparable features for less money.
Audi A4 Cabriolet is a two door convertible luxury sports car which comes in two trim levels, the 2.0T and the 3.2. For 2007, the A4 underwent some styling changes including an enlarged grille and more aggressive looking covered headlights. The 2.0T is powered by a turbocharged 4-cylinder 2.0 Liter engine that develops 200 hp an 207 lb-ft of torque. The 2.0T runs either FWD or Quattro. The 3.2 is powered by a 3.2 Liter V6 engine that summons up 255 hp and 243 ft-lb of torque. The 3.4 runs a 6-speed automatic with Quattro.
The interior of the Cabriolet is roomy and comfortable, with an optional padded, acoustic roof that comes close to the quiet ride you would expect in a hardtop. Expect with the 2007 A4 as standard equipment, a first-aid kit and high-power radio antenna. Instrumentation is easy to read and ergonomically placed, with a comfortable, adjustable drivers seat.
Cabriolet owners will find that many of the optional items available on the A4 are worth the extra charge just for the fun of having them onboard. Those adaptive high-intensity headlamps are fascinating to observe, turning to the direction you steer, enabling you to see around every bend in the road. Nearly everyone knows how entertaining an optional navigation system can be, making it almost fun to be lost. The 2007 A4 Cabriolet deserves the ability to drive with a thrilling soundtrack playing, especially Wagner’s “Flight of the Valkyries” through a Bose(R) Premium Sound System. Don’t count safety options out, as the A4 has plenty of them, including Rear Side Airbags and a Tire Pressure Monitor.
2007 Audi A4 Cabriolet sets a new standard for safety in a convertible with protection for occupants in the event of a rollover. Onboard sensors cause two protective bars to pop up when a rollover is about to occur, effectively serving as a roll bar to protect the occupants. Keeping you from further harm is the A4’s 4-wheel ABS with brake energy apportionment system, plus Audi’s skid control system. Audi also has its occupants covered with front side and side curtain airbags.
Handling dynamics in the A4 Cabriolet are astonishingly agile and smooth, with minimal body flex and noise. The Audi A4 2.0T gets 23 mpg city, 34 mpg highway, while the 3.4 gets 17 mpg city, 27 mpg highway. The 2007 Audi A4 Cabriolet is surprisingly quiet, good-looking, fast, and luxurious for its price range.
2.0 Liter 200hp 4-banger or a 255hp 3.1 Liter V6. The Cabriolet can run with front-wheel drive or Quattro, and comes in three trim levels, the 2.0T, the 3.2T, and the S Line. The 2008 Cab exterior design is a carryover from 2007.
The interior of the A4 Cabriolet is smartly appointed with wood or metal trim, comfortable seating for four, and easy to read instrumentation. Visibility is good, even with the top up, and the cabin is comfortable with dual-zone climate control. In spite of the soft top, the A4 Cabriolet is surprisingly quiet, top up or down. There is only the sound of the engine when it approached shifting velocity.
Audi has made accommodations to the A4 that seem to solve many of the safety issues inherent with convertibles: side impact airbags to offer head protection, rear-seat side impact airbags, reinforced pillars, and two roll beams that project upward from behind the passenger’s heads in the event of a rollover. Keeping the A4 shiny side up and facing forward are the jobs of the stability system, including brake force augmentation. For parking assistance, the new reverse gear assist alerts the driver if objects are in the car’s path to the rear. A feature from concept cars of long ago, headlights that turn in the direction of the vehicle’s path are available on the 2008 A4.
Following up on the safety issue, Audi rated favorably in crash tests performed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. In frontal crash tests, the 2008 Audi A4 Cabriolet rated 4 stars. Other testing is currently going on. In the effort to maximize fuel efficiency, the 2008 Audi A4 Cabriolet has achieved 15mpg city, 25mpg highway in its 3.2 series, and 21mpg city and 31mpg highway in its 2.0T models.
The new A4 sedan will be redesigned for 2009, but the Cabriolet will still be based on the old version of the sedan until it is replaced with what will be called the A5 Cabriolet.
You will find a wide variety of engine choices to power the A4 Cabriolet. This will include five different power plants, two gasoline and three diesel options. All five use direct fuel injection technology. The gasoline engines are the 1.8 TFSI and the 3.2 FSI. The 3.2 version produces 265 horsepower and will go from 0 - 60 in around 6 seconds. Top speed for this version will be 155 mph. The diesel options include 2 V6 engines and an in line four cylinder. The 2009 Cabriolet is only available in front wheel drive, with an automatic transmission. Depending on which engine is under your hood, you can expect to get between 17 and 23 miles per gallon in the city, and between 25 and 30 on the highway.
The 2009 Cabriolet is a sleek and stylish looking car, even without the redesign that the sedan is getting. The simple shape is very recognizable, as is the signature Audi grill design. For safety purposes, the windshield frame has been beefed up so that it stays intact in the event of a rollover. The spoked wheels provide an added elegance to the overall appearance.
The interior of the Cabriolet is as attractive as it is functional. On the 3.2 version, the cockpit is accented with a handsome genuine wood trim. This comfortable ride also offers a load of technological options, including the Audi Navigation Plus system. This is a multifunctional navigation and entertainment system. It also offers the Audi parking System, as well as connectivity for Bluetooth and many other portable tech items.
Audi has put a great amount of effort into the safety of the Cabriolet. In addition to the reinforced window frame, headrest guards will deploy in the event of a rollover to protect the passengers. It also offers many of the standard safety features that you would expect to find in a new car today, including anti-lock brakes and stability system to name a few. On the road, the Audi A4 offers a very enjoyable ride. It handles surprisingly well for not being an actual sports car. With the top down, the Cabriolet offers an exciting ride on the highway, or through town. This is a pretty impressive car for under $40,000. The lower end, without any options, will start at around $30,000.
Shortly thereafter, Audi recognized the need to satisfy the demand for a more cargo conscious vehicle and a wagon body style was added to the A4 lineup. It was not until 2002 that the A4 Cabriolet or convertible style, joined the A4 family, appealing to those who wanted more of a luxury sports compact car with the convenience and driving thrill associated with letting the top down.
The convertible was based on the A4 engine technology and officially replaced the previous Cabriolet that had been discontinued in 1998. The Cabriolet is often thought of as a reliable yet somewhat oversized and underpowered vehicle, however, the vehicle was released in 2002 with a more powerful engine and streamlined design than its Cabriolet predecessor. The convertible top is electrically operated and can be smoothly lowered or raised within 30 seconds.
The undeniable presence of the vehicle was not only visually stunning; it was also equipped with a continuously variable transmission which was highly regarded in the automotive industry worldwide. Its lightweight, responsive transmission and outstanding mechanical engineering is what has made the Audi such a reliable and performance driven vehicle.
For the 2007 model year, the vehicle is larger and has room for four passengers. Available with either a 4 cylinder or V6 engine, the 2007 A4 Cabriolet has also been enhanced with interior and exterior components that add a dash of elegance and increased convenience and functionality to this model.
One year later, consumer demand and the popularity of a more cargo conscious vehicle prompted the introduction of the Audi A4 Avant and the wagon version of the popular vehicle was introduced in 1995.
With all the convenience and comfort features of the Audi A4, the Avant wagon provided more passenger space and more room for the cargo frequently transported by business travelers and younger families. The vehicle was available in either front wheel drive or four wheel drive with a variety of engine sizes. The engineering and mechanical aspects of the Avant Wagon rivaled the engineering and luxury options of more expensive and more popular German models such as the BMW and Mercedes Benz without the heartier price tag. All of the profound and more popular features of the Audi A4 sedan were also featured in the Audi A4 Avant.
Throughout the years between the introduction of the vehicle in 1995 and the 2007 model year, proficient German engineering has been the driving force of the A4, whether in sedan, wagon or convertible form. Though the sedan version appealed to those who did not need nor want additional cargo space, the Avant appealed to the growing population of young families and business people who needed the additional room but did not want to pay a high price or sacrifice comfort and luxury. Updates throughout the years for the Avant have included primarily intuitive engine and transmission upgrades and enhancements and more minor cosmetic upgrades including more user friendly interior controls and streamlining the body style and adding some well positioned chrome accents to give the Avant wagon more of the appearance of a sports vehicle than the typical functionality based family station wagon.
All things considered, the Audi Avant A4 Wagon has continued to be one of the most mechanically reliable vehicles in its class while also being very popular with consumers as a visually appealing compact luxury car with obtainable purpose.

The new 3.0T A6 is supercharged and comes stock with Audi Quatro AWD. In addition, the 2009 A6 lineup includes 2 other naturally aspirated engines: the base model 3.1L 255hp V6 with front wheel drive and the 4.2L 350hp V8 with Quatro AWD as well. For special shoppers, Audi is also offering a high-performing 5.2L 435hp V10.
Being larger than most of the cars in its class, the 2009 A6 by Audi is a full 8 inches longer than its cousin, the A4. The new A6 is elegant and stylish - and it tends to grow on you the more you spend time with it. It features classic Audi lines and the epitome of interior luxury. The materials used inside are soft to the touch and pleasing to the eyes.
Audi A6 taillights are wider for the 2009 models. Alloy wheels and LED running lights add flash and visual appeal. The running lights automatically illuminate when you unlock the vehicle after dark. The Prestige trim features keyless access - a remote that fits nicely in your pocket and provides push-button engine starting.
Authoritative throttling from these direct injection engines provide loads of low-end power. You can overtake delivery trucks with ease on the highways and as simplistically pass in-city traffic before running out of lane length. In fact, low-end performance for the Audi A6 is reported to be superior to even the Cadillac V6 STS, the Infiniti M35 and the Jaguar XF. Even with the considerable curb weight of 4123 pounds, the supercharged Audi A6 3.0T blasts you from zero to 60 mph in just 5.9 seconds.
All three engines utilize electronic throttling and there are some reports that include issues with gas pedal lagging. All engines are also mated to the Audi 6-speed CVT automatic transmission. It is responsive and kicks down quickly and smoothly. Likewise, upshifts are relatively fluid and accurately timed. In manual mode, the transmission becomes a clutchless shifter. If you elect for the Prestige trim, you are treated to steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters.
Engine-dependent, the 2009 A6 displays base pricing between $45,100 for the A6 3.2 and $75,900 for the 5.2L V10 version. Fuel efficiency is rated at 18/27 for the V6 models, 16/23 for the V8 and 14/19 for the V10. Quick shock absorber response standards make the Audi A6 a smooth rider - a true pleasure to cruise in. Wind noise does present a bit of an issue on long trips and that really should not be a factor given the price range.
Overall, the 2009 Audi A6 is a winner. It presents drivers and passengers with a nice mix of luxury, elegance and understated flashiness. Definitely worth closer inspection, the new Audi A6 is sure to be a great seller.
His former partners sued him for trademark infringement and a German court determined that the Horch brand belonged to his former company.August Horch was barred from using his own family name in his new car business, so he called a meeting at the apartment of Franz Fikentscher to come up with a new name for his company. During this meeting Franz’s son was quietly studying Latin in a corner of the room.
Audi’s corporate tagline is Vorsprung durch Technik, meaning “Advantage through Technology”. The German-language tagline is used in many European countries, including the United Kingdom, and in other markets, such as Latin America, Oceania and parts of Asia including Japan. A few years ago, the North American tagline was “Innovation through technology”, but in Canada the German tagline Vorsprung durch Technik was used in advertising. More recently, however, Audi has updated the tagline to “Truth in Engineering” in the U.S.
