Audi A5 Sportback Photo Scans from French Mag
16th July 2009
Hopefully our second batch of photos on the Audi A5 Sportback won’t turn out to be another photoshop job as was the case with the picture of the five-door coupe we showed you earlier today. According to our reader Florent who sent us these images, the article on the A5 Sportback was scanned from the latest issue of French Car magazine L’Auto Journal (allegedly No781).
The wait is finally over for the all-new A5 Sportback as Audi unleashed a full photo gallery of its high-anticipated five-door coupe which will be formally introduced this fall at the Frankfurt Auto Show. The German firm claims that new member of the A5 family “combines the best of various vehicle genres such as the emotion and elegance of a coupe, the comfort of a sedan and the practicality of a station wagon.” Of course most will see a five-door, liftback version of the A5 Coupe with a sleek roofline, but still, we must admit that our first reaction on the Sportback’s styling is positive.
The 2009 Audi TTS was unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show
11th July 2009
The 2009 Audi TTS was unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show; it was an instant and exciting hit. It isn’t really a new vehicle, but it is a carryover that has been significantly redesigned. It has been transformed into the best of the best in the realm of the already-hugely-popular TTS. And for 2009, the TTS will be released as both a coupe and a convertible - an already thrilling vehicle made even more heart-stirring.
Audi follows the philosophy of “Advancement through Technology”. The 2009 TTS is based on that philosophy - and it is very evident. The direct injected engine is a modified version of the notorious 2.0L turbocharged TSFI DOHC 16-valve I4 used in the Volkswagen GTI. Modifications include a beefed-up engine block as well as heavier-duty heads and rods. The turbocharger unit is also newly designed and creates 1.2 bar of forced air pressure. That pressure results in a massive increase of 72hp and 51 lb-ft of torque. That brings the totals up to a very impressive (and fun) 272hp and 258 lb-ft or mind-twisting torque. There’s also a new intercooler which keeps the air delivered to engine chilled to temps that accommodate maximum flow.
That incredible and ready power is directed to the Audi Quatro AWD system and is able to propel you from sitting still up to 62 mph in just 5.2 seconds. The Audi TTS is not fooling around, folks! If for some reason (like thrill seeking) you fail to remove your lead foot off of the accelerator pedal, the car will electronically top your speed out at an appreciable 155 miles per hour. In the United States, the 2009 TTS will be offered with the S-tronic dual-clutch 6-speed DSG transmission. It is notable that Audi promises that this transmission will accelerate faster than the manual model offered to European consumers.
There is also a new adaptive magnetic system for damping that operates in electromagnetic style on the Audi TTS to allow the driver to choose between a Sport and Standard suspension. In Sport mode, this system lowers the car by a full 10millimeters in order to considerably enhance driving performance.
Further, the 2009 TTS has a lightweight aluminum frontal suspension system that integrates electromechanical steering in order to improve fuel efficiency. It accomplishes this because it does not strip away power from the drivetrain during driving. 17-inch disc breaks are vented and positioned in back of the 18-inch alloy wheels which are standard.
In addition to that aluminum frontal suspension, the 2009 TTS has incorporated various other design standards in order to minimize curb weight. The European coupe weighs in at 3075 pounds giving it power to weight ratio of 11.24 pounds per horse - and the US models will yield an even more impressive number set.
And don’t forget that the 2009 Audi TTS is an Audi after all - the company didn’t forget to make you comfortable and able to show off many techy devices. Fuel economy numbers and CO2 emission ratings have not yet been reported. MSRPs range from $66,000 up to $70,000 and worth every penny.
Over the years has emerged as a popular crossover type vehicle. Sporting two trim levels and engines, the 2.0T Avant Quattro, 3.2 Avant Quattro are both 4-wheel drive, one housing a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine, and the other a 3.2-liter V6. Either engine comes with your choice of 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission.
Compared with last year’s model, the 2007 is roomier, more stylish, and higher spirited. For example, the 2.0 liter 4-cylinder engine develops 200 horsepower (149kW), while the 3.2 liter V-6 powers up to 255 hp (190kW) @ 6500 rpm with 243 lb-ft (328 Nm) @ 3250 rpm. To make a good thing even better, the A4 Avant Wagon also offers a performance-oriented “S Line” option that not only looks good but better equips it for road calisthenics, including 18-inch wheels and beefier 235/40 boots. Depending on whether you are carrying extra passengers or not, the cavernous A4 opens up to hold 28 or 60 cubic feet of cargo space.
Plenty of standard equipment adds value to an already solid automobile, including dual zone environmental controls and air, power locks, standard moonroof on the V6, and CD with 6-disc changer. Option packages help outfit each model with a ton of technological wonders and comfort touches. The Premium Package offered for the 2.0T includes a moonroof, cowhide upholstery and 17-inch wheels. Catering more to your needs on the road, the A4 Wagon offers an optional Convenience Package with a garage door activator, intelligent wipers, a power passenger seat, self-dimming bi-xenon headlights, an event odometer and self-darkening mirrors. Not included in a particular package, are individual options like Sirius satellite radio, satellite navigation, parking proximity alert, plus attractive natural and alloy trim.
The 3.2 liter V6 boasts a fuel consumption of 17 mpg city, 21 mpg highway, while the miserly 2.0L gets 19 mpg city and 27 mpg highway. Unparalleled safety is the goal of the engineers at Audi, and by the looks of the A4 Wagon, their goal is accomplished. The A4 Wagon offers standard front and side airbag protection for passengers as well as driver, child seat attachments (LATCH), 4-wheel ABS, stability and traction control, and security locks. The ride and handling of the A4 surprises and gratifies with agility and power. The 2007 Audi A4 Avant Wagon is a sporty yet practical wagon that adds the fun of high performance to a rather traditional vehicle.
Stylishly understated yet thoroughly roadworthy, the Avant Wagon is engineered to weather the storms and navigate any road. Whether you opt for the base A4 Wagon or go for the premium trim, all Avant Wagons have consistently exceeded all safety and performance criteria they face.
If you are hauling cargo, passengers, or both, the well-balanced Avant Wagon is as agile as a bobcat and sturdy as a grizzly bear. The interior of the A4 will impress the most jaded car critic with its numerous standard features, including: tilt and telescoping steering wheel, air conditioning, sunroof, and power windows. The luxurious upholstery and stylish wood and alloy accents add a level of richness not seen in any other wagon. Add an FM/AM radio and CD changer for an outstanding compliment to the car’s ambiance.
To carry precious human cargo, Audi backs up its luxurious packaging with concomitant safety features including: front driver and passenger airbags, and side curtain torso protective airbags. The 2008 Audi A4 Avant Wagon has passed the NHTSA criteria for frontal crashes with a 4-star rating. For side crashes, the Avant Wagon front seat tests earned 5 stars and for rear seat tests, 4 stars. When it comes to defensive driving, the Avant Wagon puts an amazing amount of control in the driver’s hands with the almost supernatural capability of electronic stability control.
At the risk of overstatement, we are impressed with the 2008 Audi A4 Avant Wagon from all viewpoints. Maneuvering the large Avant Wagon through traffic or on a winding road is smooth and effortless with Audi’s phenomenal 4-wheel drive. We doubt you will ever challenge the A4’s anti-lock brakes the way we did, to attempt to put the A4 into a 4-wheel power slide. We were also surprised and pleased at the Avant’s gas mileage, 22mpg city, 30mpg highway, putting the icing on the cake.
Competitors include the BMW 3-Series Sports Wagon, Volkswagen Passat Wagon, Saab 9-3 SportCombi, Volvo V70 and Subaru Outback.
One of the sharpest looking station wagons on the road, the Avant has been refreshed for 2009. It is longer, wider and lower than the first generation. Headlights are similar to those on the A8, and LED running lights are also part of the combination. All in all, the first glance might make you think you’re looking at a sports car instead of a station wagon.
The A4 Avant is propelled by a 2.0 liter, 211 horsepower I4 engine (no options) generating 258 pound feet of torque - which is excellent torque for a small station wagon. Like the engine, there is only one transmission, a six-speed automatic with overdrive. This combination generates 21 miles per gallon in the city and 27 miles per gallon on the highway. This is well above the average fuel efficiency of either upscale midsize cars or station wagons in general.
The A4 Avant, like all Audi vehicles, has quattro all-wheel drive. Quattro is a permanent all-wheel drive system with its genesis in the Volkswagen World War II German Army command vehicles.
In the quattro systems, torque is split between the front and rear axles. In adverse conditions the amount of torque applied to each axle can be changed instantly and unnoticeably with up to 80% of the torque going to a specific axle. The small amount of torque for the troubled axle helps maintain control of it. Unlike many modern automotive systems, this is done without computers, which actually makes it more reliable.
German engineering at its best, the A4 Avant rates five stars in every category of NHTSA crash tests. Standard safety features include antilock brakes with electronic braking assist and traction and stability controls, with a full set of airbags, anti-theft system and tire pressure monitor. An electronic parking aid is available.
The A4 Avant has only one trim, but being an Audi you can bet it’s a nice one. The Avant gets good marks for its overall warranty, but the power train warranty is below average for class. The other knocks on the vehicle are that it is underpowered for a high dollar vehicle and somewhat short on headroom for a station wagon.
Base price on the 2009 Audi A4 Avant Wagon is $34,500. That’s quite a bit higher than average for station wagons, but a little lower than average for upper end makes. The thing is, if you’re looking for a high-end vehicle, an Audi has the safety, the features and the reputation to back up their asking price.
With more than twelve different trim levels spanning three different models, the 2007 Audi A4 line offers sporty versatility, whether you want it in the form of a sedan, an Avant hatchback, or a convertible Cabriolet. Whichever strikes your fancy, the base model comes with a 2 liter 200 horsepower in-line four-cylinder engine, and a six-speed manual transmission. Options range from simply adding Audi’s quattro technology - their version of all-wheel drive - or upgrading to the S4 high performance version of any of the three variations, which features a powerful 340 horsepower V8 engine.
Whether you choose a sedate sedan, or the flashier S4 Cabriolet, the standard exterior and safety features are the same: halogen headlights that are aerodynamically designed, a charcoal air filter, and front airbags that not only provide dual-stage protection, but come with a sensor that detects the presence of a front-seat passenger. Both the front and rear seats are have head-protection airbags, in case of side-impact crashes, and the back seat also has the LATCH child seat system.
Interior features standard across the line include a remote locking system, power windows and door locks, a center display that shows the temperature and estimates how far you can drive before you have an empty gas tank, as well as back-lighting for easier reading, and an air conditioning system that has separate controls for the driver and front passenger. The AM/FM radio and in-dash CD are standard, but there are options for a satellite radio system, (the line is satellite capable) and Bose speaker systems are available as well.
Starting MSRPs for the 2007 Audi A4 range from $28,240 for the base model sedan to $39,100 for the Cabriolet, with the Avant falling between the two.
Whether you choose the 2.0T, the 3.2T, or the S-line package, the power is there, as is the luxury. The 2.0T comes with a turbocharged 2.0Liter 200hp 4-cylinder engine that is surprisingly wiry. The 3.2T offers a 3.1Liter 265hp V6 that will also throw you around the track. Both engines come with a choice of 6-speed manual or 7-speed automatic. The third trim level, the S-Line adds a sport suspension package, and spoiler, Oh, a 420-hp 4.2-liter V8 engine.
The 3.2 trim level adds quality touches to its interior, including fine leather upholstery and wood accents. Even if you choose the base 2.0T, expect an array of power features such as door locks, windows, and climate control. Add a moonroof and cruise control and you have the makings of a true entry level luxury car. Even id power door locks, tilt, telescoping steering column, and cruise control seem ordinary, the Audi A4 sedan has a few aces up its sleeve.
When compared with two or three of its closest competitors, things look pretty similar, except for the 2008 Audi A4 sedan’s Quattro 4-wheel drive. With years of experience perfecting its drive train, Audi can just sit and let the Quattro do its thing. Nothing else comes close, is so seamless, so trouble-free. Combined with the A4’s anti-lock brakes, multilink suspension, and stability control system, critics are hard-pressed to find anything better.
At 22mpg city and 31mpg highway, the base 2.0T Audi A4 sedan is a strong balance between performance, luxury, and sensibility. This is especially true considering that the A4 has segment leading safety ratings. With its front side, driver side, passenger side airbags, Audi is confident that its Insurance Institute for Highway Safety ratings will be as solid for 2008 as they were in 2007.
The A4 is Audi’s smallest sedan model, but it is continuing to grow. In fact, it is only 1.3 inches shorter in its wheelbase than is the Audi A6. That’s a full 6 inches longer than the wheelbase on the 2008 Audi A4. It’s also two inches wider and, including the Toyota Avalon, is the largest vehicle in its class. These dimensional increases grant the 2009 A4 enhanced levels of road-gripping performance and an elevated confidence range as well.
MSRPs for the Audi A4 range from $30,700 up to $48,800 and it comes with an impressive 48-month, 50,000-mile standard warranty. Fuel economy ratings make you feel good delivering 30 mpg on the highways and 23 mpg in the cities. It shares its underpinnings with the soon-to-come A5 and S5. Its lines are expertly-sculpted and it features a new front end that is noticeably aggressive. There are also catchy rows of running lights under each headlight. The longer wheelbase is accentuated with a shorter front overhand to make the car appear less long than it actually is. There has also been a 10 percent decrease in body weight over last year’s model due mainly to the use of “ultra-high-strength steel”.
On the inside, the 2009 A4 by Audi is all class. It features almost Lexus-grade materials and design standards. The seats are crafted from black leather and make a bold statement of elegance when matched with the black door panels. Aluminum accents are placed throughout to complete the pricey look and feel. As for cabin dimensions, they have grown in every respect as well. The seats offer considerably more comfort than did the 2008 ones and the trunk volume has increased by 3.6 cubic feet to 17 cf. The 14-speaker Bang and Olufsen 6-CD, iPod-enabled stereo system also has no problem getting your attention.
Enhanced safety features, both standard and optional continue to keep Audi in the forefront of the industry as a company that cares a lot about you and your family. There are 6 airbags standard and an option to purchase rear-side airbags as well. Engine-wise, the Audi A4 does not fool around; the stock engine pumps out 265 horses from its 3.2L V6/ZF 6-speed transmission combo. It will take you from 0 to 60 mph in only 6.2 seconds. Direct fuel injection and a 2-staged valve lifting system have created a 6 percent increase in fuel efficiency over last year’s model. Reduced bodily weight has also lowered the drag coefficient from 0.31 to 0.29 Cod. Even the new air conditioner offers a ten percent power increase while simultaneously requiring roughly 20 percent less fuel to operate it.
Not surprisingly, the 2009 Audi A4 Sedan is a hot seller and continues to build solid consumer loyalty for the auto giant. The A4 over delivers in almost every respect imaginable. Power, safety, comfort, style, performance and above-average fuel economy make the Audi A4 well worth the price.
door passenger sedan. One year later, consumer demand and the popularity of a more cargo conscious vehicle prompted the introduction of the Audi A4 Avant and the wagon version of the popular vehicle was introduced in 1995.
With all the convenience and comfort features of the Audi A4, the Avant wagon provided more passenger space and more room for the cargo frequently transported by business travelers and younger families. The vehicle was available in either front wheel drive or four wheel drive with a variety of engine sizes. The engineering and mechanical aspects of the Avant Wagon rivaled the engineering and luxury options of more expensive and more popular German models such as the BMW and Mercedes Benz without the heartier price tag. All of the profound and more popular features of the Audi A4 sedan were also featured in the Audi A4 Avant.
Throughout the years between the introduction of the vehicle in 1995 and the 2007 model year, proficient German engineering has been the driving force of the A4, whether in sedan, wagon or convertible form. Though the sedan version appealed to those who did not need nor want additional cargo space, the Avant appealed to the growing population of young families and business people who needed the additional room but did not want to pay a high price or sacrifice comfort and luxury. Updates throughout the years for the Avant have included primarily intuitive engine and transmission upgrades and enhancements and more minor cosmetic upgrades including more user friendly interior controls and streamlining the body style and adding some well positioned chrome accents to give the Avant wagon more of the appearance of a sports vehicle than the typical functionality based family station wagon.
All things considered, the Audi Avant A4 Wagon has continued to be one of the most mechanically reliable vehicles in its class while also being very popular with consumers as a visually appealing compact luxury car with obtainable purpose.
